Dementia Inclusive Durham

Dementia Inclusive Durham is the primary initiative of Dementia Inclusive Inc.

On June 15, 2015, at a Durham community forum to recognize World Elder Abuse Prevention Day, when a question was asked about participants’ thoughts on risks for elder abuse, a community member responded – “living with dementia”.  At that moment,  Dementia Inclusive Durham (DID) was conceived out of a shared desire to support and embrace persons living with dementia as valued members of our community. DID grew as a partnership of grassroots volunteers coming together to serve as a catalyst for enhancing their safety, quality of life, and well-being.

About DID

  • Our Mission is to serve as a catalyst for enhancing the well-being of persons living with dementia in Durham County. We do this by educating the community and bringing together different sectors and stakeholders to create a culture of understanding across our city.

  • We imagine a Durham where persons living with dementia are valued as individuals and are fully supported in their pursuit of quality of life and well-being. While there isn’t a cure yet, there are proven ways to enhance the quality of life and care for everyone affected by it. Dementia Inclusive Durham is working to bring the community together to learn proactive, person-centered, and strength-based approaches that focus on enhancing the individual person’s well-being of persons living with dementia.

  • DID was conceived in 2015 as a grassroots effort. In 2021, Dementia Inclusive Inc. followed. Think of DID as the seed that put down roots, and DII as the overarching tree of knowledge (whose branches grew from DID).

  • Established in 2015, DID has sponsored annual community-wide conferences, enlightening the community about dementia, and sharing ways to support and enrich the lives of those living with dementia. Our organization has offered seminars and training to faith-based communities, long term care homes, communities and neighborhoods, civic organizations, and Durham City and County Government.
